Music Magazine Draft

For the front cover of my Music Magazine Draft I have chosen to use a closeup of the artist that I have invented through my imagination. I have chosen the person that I am using for my magazine. The pug I have chosen is a simple circular pug with the text "Free CD Inside" as it's a special edition of the magazine. I have multiple sell lines on my front cover as I've decided to stick to the grid layout as it makes the magazine look a lot more professional and gives it a clean look. I haven't got a header or footer but after some decision I've decided that I will add a header and footer to my actual music magazine front cover and I have also changed the design of the masthead itself to fit the magazine colour scheme of red, white and black.

For my contents page draft I chose to stick to a simplistic layout that shows the audience of the magazine what's inside the magazine clearly as I've split up each different aspect that is contained within my magazine. The three different sections are "Latest Headlines in Music", "Gaming News" and "Cameras and Filmography" as those are the things I have decided to base my magazine from. I have also chosen to include an image of an Acoustic-Electric Guitar plugged into an Amp with a Microphone to add to the contents page and keep it related to the acoustic theme. At the top of my contents page I've kept it simplistic and shortened "Acoustic Solutions" to "AS" so it says "AS Contents". I've included a footer on the contents page which shows any additional information about the magazine and also shows the page numbers.

For my double page spread I have chosen to use a page with text one the one side with background information about my artist and also promotional information about new upcoming songs and albums etc. The text I have chosen to format in columns with a pull quote in the middle of the middle column. At the end of the right column I have decided to put a subsidiary image of his new album cover as a form of more promotion. On the right side of the double page spread I have decided to place an image of the artist with his guitar on his back with an amp and a window in the background to keep the photo simplistic yet still meaningful. I have also chosen to place the headline of the article above the picture to keep with a simplistic but clear layout.

This is my School Magazine Contents Page which has been created using Adobe Indesign CS6. To create this contents page I had to find good areas to take pictures that I felt would suit the contents page and would advertise the school for the resources that we have available to use. For my contents page I used 3 subsidiary images of these things and then used 3 text boxes to show what each picture was and then show what you could find throughout the magazine and where in the magazine you would find those topics.
I used the same font for my masthead on the contents but I changed the colour of the font and the font itself for the "Contents" part as I felt it makes it so that the masthead stands out from the actual contents page itself. I also felt by using the colour yellow for the "Contents" part it helped it to be more similar to the page itself and linked it a lot more with the contents page.

This is my analysis of two of the more popular Acoustic magazines. Despite them being the two most popular they couldn't be any more opposite, whereas one focuses on acoustic artists, the other focuses on the instrumental side of acoustic music showing that there can be very different audiences even if they share the same taste in music genre.

Masthead

This is my masthead, I haven't changed it from my original draft.

I decided to name my magazine 'Recess' because it's another term

for what we call "break". By having this masthead I feel it is an easy to remember masthead as it is quite simple. My masthead is the colour red with a black stroke/outline which is a good colour scheme.

Pugs

My pugs use the same colour scheme as my masthead, it is red with a black stroke/outline and has black text on the inside. My pugs relate to an aspect of the school. Both of my pugs are used to try to attain the reader's attention so that they buy the magazine.

Front Cover Final Design

The final design of my front cover came together quite well and I think that considering it was my first attempt, and my first time ever using InDesign and making a magazine cover that it went decently well.  The colour scheme of my magazine front cover is mostly red and black as I feel they work well together as a colour scheme. My main image was a Sixth Form student who is also studying Media this year, I decided to use him for the image because I felt he suited the image of a school magazine as he is higher up in the school and works as an example for the younger pupils. My masthead is the same as it was on my original draft, but the font was different to my original draft. I haven't got a logo because I was stuck as to what to use for a logo on my magazine cover. I used a gradient for the background to try to make it look more professional as originally it was just plain white which I wasn't a very big fan of so I added a gradient which faded between white, grey and black this helps to make my magazine look a lot more attractive to the eye. Overall my design is a pretty simple design but maintains the grid layout through the way I have placed my subsidiary images, sell lines and pugs around the main image that is placed in the middle. I am quite pleased with the outcome of my first attempt at a magazine front cover.

This was my initial layout for my magazine and the design was what I had in my head, as you can see my masthead is 'Recess'. On this draft I  haven't actually put actual text in the sell line boxes or put any images in the subsidiary image boxes... Or even a Pug in the Pug box simply because this draft was purely used for layout of my magazine. From this I was able to imagine a basic outline as to what I wanted on the front cover of my school magazine which made the process of creating the magazine a lot easier for me.

Where as here, this was my second draft with the pugs filled in and the sell lines and subsidiary images all drawn in. I also changed my main image to have two people, whereas the first draft only had 1 person. I decided to change it to two people because to me it took up a lot more space and looked a lot better. I now also have two pugs instead of one to make the magazine more appealing to the eye and to make it seem as if there are more interesting things. I also now made a logo for my magazine which is the 'R' in 'Recess' to attempt to make it seem more appealing to the viewer reading the magazine. Some things that I didn't add that could increase the realism of the magazine are a price tag, or maybe even a barcode. I also could've made the logo a bit bigger and bolder so that it's easier to locate that it is 'Recess' that is the masthead and it is the 'R' that is the logo. Overall I think my second draft was an improvement on my first draft but I still think there is room for improvement.
